I'm supposed to be going out to see the Baja Bug again today at 5 and possible purchase it. The guy today brought it to a garage for a safety inspection, which it passed thankfully. On his way home though, he texted me and said the carb is acting up. He doesn't think it's running too lean, but it is misfiring and not idling properly. He's willing to go $200 his asking price because he needs the money and is sick of messing with the carb. The carb is aftermarket and usually runs fine and he also has the stock, rebuilt carb in his garage. WHAT SHOULD I DO OPPO? This car is making me nervous now!

buy it, put on OG carb to get home, tinker with the aftermarket carb later.

That's what I'm thinking of doing. I, unfortunately don't have any experience at all with carbs so I'm kinda nervous about this.

He should help you change over to the original, if he wants your money.

haha thats probably what I'm going to do. Don't you have to adjust the valves and timing amongst other things when you swap the carb?

ordinarily I'd say walk away, but the simplicity of those cars make a lot of problems easy to solve.
Carbs are twitchy...I vote get it. The guy is honest, that's points in my book.

Ya I'm kinda second guessing it, but Archduke suggested that I have him help me put the original rebuilt carb back on the car and then I'll pay him if its working.

Don't think so, should just disconnect the throttle linkage and fuel line off the one that's on it, and unbolt it. Put the new one on, reconnect the fuel line and linkage, prime it and fire it up.

Get it, install OE carb, fiddle with aftermarket solution later.

A carb is basically just a hole. If it was working recently, it can almost certainly be fixed with no (or few) extra parts. There's only a couple things that could be wrong with it. As long as the rest of the engine is good, fixing a carb should be a breeze.
That said, if the car is misfiring it might have a timing problem. If you don't know how to troubleshoot engine problems and can't afford to tinker (?), a baja bug is the wrong car for you. If you're looking to learn, a VW is a great place to start.
